The 12-Step Model: A Holistic Approach to Addiction Treatment and Recovery

At Hanley Center, treatment is based on the goals and spiritual principles of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Like 12-Step programs, Hanley Center approaches addiction treatment holistically, addressing the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of alcoholics and addicts.

Physically, the disease of addiction causes the body to become dependent on alcohol and drugs, which can lead to a lack of nutrition, fitness and a host of other unhealthy physical symptoms.

At Hanley Center, each patient will go through a period of medical detoxification if necessary and medical stabilization for health issues.

Mentally, addiction impairs the cognitive processes, resulting in a preoccupation with using, mental distortions, and defense mechanisms such as denial, minimizing, justifying and blaming.

To address patients’ mental well-being, we educate them about the disease, reframe cognitive distortions, and confront their defense mechanisms.

Emotionally, chemical dependency results in a decreased tolerance for emotional pain, mood swings, difficulty managing feelings and dealing with stress, avoiding, and stuffing or medicating feelings.

To confront their emotional issues, we help patients develop coping skills for dealing with stress and emotions in a healthy way, find safe places, and develop safe relationships to do the “emotional work” of recovery.

Socially, addiction results in interpersonal conflict, destruction of relationships, isolation and withdrawal of friends and family members, loneliness, and decreased involvement in activities that used to be enjoyable and meaningful.

At Hanley Center, we help patients reconnect with leisure activities, reintegrate with others, learn how to ask for help, take responsibility for themselves, make amends, and give back.

Spiritually, the disease of addiction results in a violation of values and morals, remorse, guilt, irrational fears, hopelessness and despair.

Our goal is to help patients identify a power greater than themselves and reconnect with the beauty of life, as well as develop gratitude and a sense of serenity and hope.

Share with family and friends

The Baby Boomer Generation is comprised of 77 million individuals born between the years of 1946 and 1964. Both leading and trailing edge baby boomers came of age under entirely different circumstances than their parents and their children. Idealistic in their youth, they set out to change every American institution and they continue to be a driving force of change in our social framework. Their influences include the Vietnam War, man’s first walk on the moon and many other political and social milestones. Today, another “Boomer” turns 50 approximately every 7 seconds.

The baby boomer profile is almost a paradox; they have spent lavishly on goods and services but want to recapture idealism. Youth oriented, they have kept many a plastic surgeon in business. They reject labels like “senior” or “older adult” and they oppose ageism. Some are helping aging parents while others still support kids in college or returning adult kids. Many feel the pressure to keep working beyond retirement, may feel trapped, and yearn for a sense of fulfillment and freedom.

The Track

How do you reach the “Boomer” who suffers from addiction? Life Stages Track for Boomers offers this generation the opportunity to further explore their treatment needs. This track has been developed to holistically treat the individual that is a part of the broad and complex baby boomer generation. While patients will continue to be assigned to their primary treatment centers (Men, Women and Older Adult) they will participate in the Life Stages Track for Boomers on a daily basis to enhance their treatment. This treatment track will address the generational differences that impact a “Boomers” recovery-

Growing up in a drug culture and how that influences ones perception of drug use and abuse.

The effect of media on the pursuit of vitality and body image issues.

The impact of caring for both parents and children while defining and finding purpose for self.

Costs
Life Stages Track for Boomers has no additional charge for Hanley Center’s residential patients.
